MS Dhoni, Team India living out of a suitcase

Living out of a suitcase is well documented by George Clooney in the film 'Up in the air'. The Indian cricket team is living almost a similar existence.

The captain, for one, who plays cricket round the year. Apart from leading India in all forms of cricket, he also captains his IPL franchise and plays the Champions league. His days of rest between tours at home in Ranchi, when not shooting commercials are usually in single digits.

When a member of Indian media contingent wished him Merry Christmas! Dhoni asked back what's the similarity between Christmas, Diwali and Holi do you think? To which an old pro replied, "It's all the same if you are an Indian cricketer. Because be it any festival it goes away while you are on tour." The captain smiled back saying that's the answer he was looking for. He may have said it without a minimum of fuss but living away from family and friends is an occupational hazard that has got the better of many a sportsman.

For those who are certainties in the squad may still get to spend the New year's eve with family members. The Indian team returns back home after this tour on 31st mid night and some are planning to call immediate family in Mumbai to spend New Year together.

For those fighting for spots and out of the playing eleven here, it's back to the grind of domestic cricket. "How about Cape Town for New Year since you are in South Africa," I asked a player. "Ranji Trophy khelna hai 2nd ko. No such luck," he would say.
